Petrex Developments, the Aberdeen based Subsea Engineering and Project Management Specialists have sponsored the planes of pilots Des Hart and Trevor Jarvis of Team GB, in this years’ Air Race 1 World Cup.
Earlier this month saw international teams arrive for the Air Race 1 World Cup at the Monastir International Airport, Tunisia, which in contrast to the old surroundings of the ancient city, is a modern airport serving as an active international hub for tourists from Europe and beyond.
Air Race 1 is pure motorsport at its fastest. It is a thrilling test of pilot skill based upon the long-running formula one class of aircraft. All airplanes race against each other at speeds of over 450kph together on a circuit just 2km end to end. The first aircraft to cross the finish line wins. The event culminates on a final race day for the public when at least three main event races will take place with other activities and entertainment. The event draws many thousands of live spectators and a massive television audience around the world as well as a live internet broadcast throughout the event.
A great effort was put in not just with the challenges of flying but with the transporting of planes by truck from the UK. Then followed a day spent checking and rebuilding ready for pre-race shake downs. Skilful engineering solutions eradicated some technical problems including fitting two replacement engines along the way allowing Des a podium finish of 3rd place in the Silver Race Section. The Air Race 1 World Cup rolls onto Spain next where the Team are looking for a good 1st and 2nd place, then Trevor is onto America and Reno for a flat out finish to the tournament and season. Good luck and Best of British to Des, Trevor and the full Team GB entourage.
